Why So Many 'Johann's' and 'Maria's' in our family line?

A quick look at our family tree and I can easily count 10 men whose first name is 'Johann.' The same goes for the women of which there are also 10 with the first name of Maria. Why so many Johann's and Maria's?

Well, there's a good reason or at least one that makes sense. It was common in the 17th and 18th centuries for parents to give their child a saint's name and a secular  name. This custom originated in France and Germany during the Middle Ages. They saint's name would be their first name and would be used only for religious purposes, while the second name would be the secular name and would be the name they would be called by.

St. John

Johann is the German spelling for John, so all young men who are named Johann are named after Saint John. He was by far the most popular saint that parents named their sons after.

Our family, in particular, uses the names Johann Georg and Johann Adam frequently. The second names Georg and Adam would be repeated, as it is also German custom to name the children after their grandfather or father.

The same goes for the girls! The favorite saint that the girls in our line are named after is Saint Mary which in
St. Mary
German translates to Maria. Maria Barbara is without a doubt the most common names given in our family history, as we have 6 of them. We also have a Maria Dorothea, Maria Clara and a Maria Apollonia.

People of the Middle Ages were very religious, and so it was a normal part of life to name your child after a saint, with the hope that the saint would look over your child through life. It appears as though both the Catholics and Lutherans assumed this same custom.

So, now we see why the names 'Johann' and 'Maria' keep reappearing generation after generation. It does make it a bit difficult when researching names but they had no idea that 350 years later their descendants would be searching for them.

The Hilpert Line in Ochsenfurt, Bavaria

The Hilpert line of Ochsenfurt is one of Franz X. Grunewald's paternal lines. With new records that have been found, we are now able to take our Hilpert line back 4 more generations, to 1655, in Ochsenfurt. We will backtrack a bit to show where and when the Hilpert line marries into the Grunewald line.

Franz X. Grunewald
1903 - 1985
|
Wendelin Grunewald
1871 - 1933
|
Wendelin Georg Grunewald
1823 - 1884
|
Wendelin Grunewald
1790 - 1842

It is with Wendelin Grunewald born in 1790 who marries Eva Godefrida Hilpert (1791 -1854) on April 17, 1820 in Frickenhausen that the Hilpert line becomes a part of our family line. The witnesses at their marriage were: Georg Kleinschmidt, a brick layer and Lorenz Dehner, a skipper by trade.

A brief history on Wendelin and Eva before we continue down the Hilpert line. Wendelin was born on March 8, 1790 in Frickenhausen. His occupation is listed on his marriage record as 'tailor' and he is listed as living at N.R. 65 in Frickenhausen. He died on November 2, 1842 at the age of 52 from 'exhaustion' according to his death record, and is buried in Frickenhausen. We know of 2 children that Wendelin and Eva had: Wendelin born in 1823 (which is our ancestor) and a brother named Georg born in 1827. We're sure there were more children but have not been able to locate records for them as of yet.

His wife, Eva Godefrida Hilpert was born November 13, 1791 in Ochsenfurt, Bavaria (Bayern), Germany. She died at the age of 63 on March 3, 1854 from 'lung inflammation' per her death record and is buried in Frickenhausen.

We will now continue back 4 more generations on the Hilpert line. The Hilpert's were of the Catholic religion and these records were found at St. Thelka Catholic Church in Ochsenfurt.

Eva's parents are
|
Konrad Hilpert and Katharina Barbara Wiederer
Konrad's occupation is listed as 'Barrel Maker.' We're assuming the barrels were for storing wine
|
Johann Martin Hilpert
born June 1, 1712 in Ochsenfurt - married Maria D. Kleinschrod on 9/11/1758
His profession is listed as 'Fischermeister' or 'Master Fisherman'
|
Johann Georg Hilpert
born September 4, 1681 in Ochsenfurt - married Anna C. Hennermann
Johann's profession is listed as a 'Hacker.' We have not been able to find out the translation yet.
|
Johann Georg Hilpert
born March 15, 1655 in Ochsenfurt - married Barbara (last name unknown)

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
As far as the lines for the wives that the Hilpert men married, we have very limited information on Katharina Barbara Wiederer's line. We do not know her date of birth or death, but we do know that her father is Johann Georg Wiederer (Widerer) and her mother is Agnes Hehn. No other information has been found regarding her or her parents.

We have not found any information for Anna C. Hennermann or the line for Barbara (maiden name unknown) at this time.

Fortunately, we do have information on 4 generations of the Kleinschrod family line which I will write about soon. Stay tuned . . .

Marktbreit - Home to the Mandel Family

Our ancestor, Johann Mandel, was born in the pretty little village of Marktbreit. On our visit to Germany in the summer of 2016 we visited Marktbreit and made sure to take plenty of photos as we walked around the town.

This is a photo of the entrance into the town as well as the outside of the city wall and tower.

You can see it is a beautiful little Franconian village looking through the entranceway.

This photo is looking back at the entrance tower from inside the village.

A beautiful building trimmed in yellow and the tower of the Lutheran church off to the right.

This is S. Nikolai Lutheran Church

 \
The beautiful old doors into St. Nikolai

Narrow cobblestone streets lead to homes where the citizens of Marktbreit reside. Unfortunately, we do not know the home in which the Mandel family lived.

St. Ludwig Catholic Church which is most likely the church that Johann was baptized in.

The entrance doors to St. Ludwig's. We caught my cousin Sabine's husband Dieter in the photo.

This is the tower of the Lutheran Church from a different angle.

This sign indicates that the cemetery is located behind this wall.

More beautiful old doors that lead into the walled cemetery.

The next couple of photos are of the cemetery where our ancestors surely were buried in the past.

The village has beautiful architecture and is so clean.

Water still separates the city from the outside wall which was built to keep marauders out during the Medieval time period.

Marktbreit was a beautiful Medieval village that is well preserved.

Johann Mandel

Johann Mandel was born on January 13, 1831 in the pretty village of Marktbreit, Germany. He was baptized in the Catholic Church on January 31, 1831.

His birth record in the Catholic Archives lists only his mother who is Dorothea Mandel, presumably of Marktbreit.

Parish records also reveal that Johann was married twice. On July 13, 1859 in Marktbreit, Johann married Maria Ursula Windfelder. We do not know if any children were born to this marriage or when Maria died. It is likely that Johann brought children with him into his second marriage.

Ten years later, Johann married a second time on October 9, 1869 to our ancestor, Anna Margaretha Kinzinger (1830 - 1910) from Huttenheim. They were married in St. Peter's Church in nearby Wurzburg. Anna was 39 years old when she married Johann, and quite possibly may have been a widow.

Franz Xaver Grunewald (Johann's grandson) spoke of him in his memoirs 'Rotlauf.' He said that Johann was a musician and a schostermeister (shoemaker). The records we were able to obtain from the Catholic Archives in Wurzburg also list his occupation as a shoemaker.

We are uncertain of what city Johann died in, but his death was in 1886 - 24 years prior to Anna's death.

Anna Margaretha Kinzinger

Anna Margaretha Kinzinger
was born on April 2, 1830 in the Bavarian village of Huttenheim, Germany, which is about 322 kilometers southwest of Marktbreit where she lived as an adult.

Anna Margaretha was born to Andreas Kinzinger and Katharina Hannewacker. Sadly, she was only 24 years old when her father died.

Fifteen years after her father's death, she married Johann Mandel (1831 - 1886) of Marktbreit on October 9, 1869 in St. Peter's Church in nearby Wurzburg.  According to the parish records, Joseph and Andreas Wagner, custodes in the church, were their witnesses. How they met is a mystery to us since they did not live in the same area. She was 39 when she married and very likely may have been a widow with children.

One year after their marriage, Maria 'Rettel' Mandel (1870 - 1925) - our ancestor -  was born in Marktbreit. We do not know if there were any other children born after Maria.

After her husband, Johann, died, Anna moved to Frickenhausen to live with Wendel and Maria until her death in 1910.
